5G is the foundation for expanding the potential of the Networked Society.  The move to 5G will add a new element: the industrial internet. We'll see new as-a-service business models based on network slicing. Network slices in the context of 5G will be like virtual networks on-demand. 5G will enable more secure transactions and expand the battery life of IoT devices by 10X. All this will create opportunities for new use cases that we haven’t yet dreamed of.

Ulf ewaldsson

5G is the biggest opportunity ever for our industry. We need to make sure there is one global standard that does not fragment terminal vendors and prevent the global scale that we have become used to with LTE. It is a global industry and teamwork is needed to achieve success.”

Ulf Ewaldsson, Senior Vice President and CTO at Ericsson

Fixed wireless access on a massive scale with 5G

The promise of ubiquitous fixed wireless access (FWA) looms large with every new generation of wireless or mobile technology, and 5G is no exception. Indeed, one of the 5G use cases currently gaining momentum in the industry is FWA for both small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and residential applications.

5G for industry remote operation

5G will support transformation of all industries, and Ericsson Research works on concepts and prototypes together with industry partners. One example of an industry use case is Industry remote operation, which we are exploring together with ABB. In this video we present the demonstration of robot remote control with haptic feedback and explain some of the key requirements and technologies involved.

5G for the mining industry

To be relevant for any industry, 5G must support any service or application required. Once you implement 5G and support these use cases the innovation starts.

5G for platooning

The transportation industry is striving to improve their efficiency and reduce carbon footprint. One way to achieve this is to have trucks driving at close distances, creating so called truck platoons, tightly coordinated through vehicle to vehicle communication. Ericsson collaborate with Scania to understand 5G requirements of platooning.

5G for traffic management

Traffic management is the system that will make our transport system smart. We want to make an intelligent transport system to manage and proactively design traffic flows for a better transport services and traffic environment. To be able to create this connected, cooperative and automated traffic system we need 5G to handle this mission critical communications. So eventually it will be the bus catching you and not the other way around.

What will 5G enable?

5G will enable new functionality for people, society and enterprises. Our 5G use cases, divided in 6 categories, explore how each industry will be transformed when the technology becomes a reality.

We asked 650 executives from 8 industries how they use communications technology today, which use cases are likely to dominate their industry, and what business reasons are driving them to move to 5G.

Broadband experience: everywhere, anytime

This use case shows how it will be possible to communicate in crowded or remote areas at high speed, thanks to a decrease in latency and the increase in data rates. With 5G, every mobile user will experience high-quality broadband service both upload and download.

Smart vehicles, transport and infrastructure

Sensors embedded in roads, railways, airfields and vehicles will communicate with each other through the 5G network. Ericsson is fully aware that this use case is focused on massive machine type communication and is working to ensure that the 5G network has the necessary high coverage and low power consumption.

Together we make 5G a reality

Our 5G Radio Prototypes are the first products designed to enable operators to conduct live field trials in their own networks. With Ericsson 5G Radio Prototypes, operators move beyond the 5G hype of lab-based speed tests to see the potential for 5G in their own network environments and markets. Our common 5G architecture, with innovative radio system, software platforms including core, OSS/BSS and services, will deliver on the promise of 5G for improved capacity, density, latency and agility.
